SURGICAL
RESIDENCY PROGRAM
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
All PGY-1 positions are filled through
the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) with the
electronic residency application service (ERAS). All
applications are reviewed through ERAS. Our application
deadline is November 2, 2012. Three interview days for
categorical candidates are held from November through
January.
Criteria for categorical and
preliminary candidates: Applicants with minimum
USMLE scores of 93% will be considered. Only the J-1
Visa will be sponsored. ECFMG Certificates must be
received in time to begin the program on June 14, 2013.
On occasion, advanced positions at the PGY-2 or PGY-3
level become available for residents desiring one or two
years of surgical training.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical
Education, the surgical residency training program offers
both categorical and preliminary training programs. The
five-year categorical program leads to residents being
eligible for examination by the American Board of Surgery.
Three residents are matched in the categorical track each
year. The current compliment of residents includes 32
residents and a breast fellow.
House Staff Operative Log Documentation:
We participate in the ACGME web based record keeping
program. Based on the requirements of the ACGME's Residency
Review Committee, each resident maintains a record of all
cases in which he or she participates. The house staff
officer's experience is reviewed periodically to ensure a
complete and balanced exposure to the components of general
surgery is obtained. |

Ginzburg and Stoller Awards |
|
Each year the Faculty of the Department of Surgery
are asked to nominate two residents whom they feel merit the honor
of receiving the prestigious Leon Ginzburg Achievement Award and the
Norman M. Stoller Award.
The Ginzburg Award is for a chief resident
completing the Surgical Residency Program, who has demonstrated
outstanding leadership and surgical skills. The recipient of this
prestigious award for the 2010-2011 academic year is Jorys Martinez,
MD. Dr. Martinez will be a Fellow in Plastics and Reconstructive
Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Norman M. Stoller Award is presented to an
intern who has shown outstanding qualities of devotion and
dedication displayed to their patients. The recipient for the
2010-2011 academic year is Arthur Yushuva, MD. Dr. Yushava will be
a categorical third year resident at The Abington Memorial Hospital
in Abington, PA.
